Every single day there is an opportunity for us to notice the impact that our communication has on those around us. So why is it that so many people let those opportunities go unnoticed?
The reason is a lack of self awareness. It is not deliberate, generally not negatively intended, but just a process of not knowing what we don’t know or see.
I had a great coaching conversation yesterday as a follow up from a Leadership workshop I ran last month that involved the Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument Profile (www.hbdi.com) . The Leader in question was joking that it would have been better to have this information in the start of his career not the end and it may have saved him a lot of grief! We then also laughed that parenting teenagers without knowing about thinking preferences is also fraught with danger!
The reality is that if we are not self aware we go around with huge unconscious blindfolds only seeing the world according to our own inner maps. A one day workshop is often the start of peeking past those blindfolds to discover a whole new range of choices that are available to us, but only an openness to lifelong learning keeps peeling the layers back year by year.
I also got an email this week from someone I utilised some NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) techniques with over 15 years ago who credits that self awareness learnt them with putting her on a completely new path. With low self esteem issues for teenagers being at record levels helping to develop self awareness at the earliest possible age can transform a persons path in life.
I have recently completed Judith E.Glaser’s Conversational Intelligence® Accreditation and love the new set of tools it has given me for getting people to really reflect on the impact their conversations are having on those around them. I have run the first few workshops using the Conversational Intelligence ® tools and love the immediate awareness it gives to people.
